Strong approximation for ρ-mixing sequences

We establish strong invariance principles for sums of stationary ρ-mixing random variables with finite and infinite second moments under weaker mixing rates.Some earlier results are improved.As applications,some results of the law of the iterated logarithm with finite and infinite variance are obtained,also a conjecture raised by Shao in 1993 is solved.     

Three‐unit semicircles curve: A compact 3D graphical representation of DNA sequences based on classifications of nucleotides

A new three‐dimensional graphical representation of DNA sequences, three‐unit semicircles (TUS)‐curve, which maps a given sequence into a dot sequences embedded in three‐unit semicircles, is proposed based on three biclassifications of nucleotides. TUS‐curve has the merit of compactness and could avoid the degeneracy and loss of information. The geometrical center of the curve, which indicates the distribution of base frequencies of the corresponding DNA sequence, is extracted and applied to analyze the similarity of various species. Phylogenetic tree of 11 species based on their first exons of β‐globin genes showed that the TUS‐curve is a powerful tool to get valuable biological information. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Classroom note: The area under x α by geometry

By stretching the area under the curve x ^α it is shown to be of the form x ^{α + 1} p(α). Geometry is then used to prove p(α) = 1/(α + 1).     

Integral representation in the theory of continuous trading

This paper deals with predictable representation in continuous trading. First of all we give a positive answer to a conjecture of Harrison and Pliska [2]. Then we prove the completeness of a model of mixed type (see[2]). A slight modificationof this example shows that the continuous and purely discontinuous parts of a local martingale depend on the filtration.     

1,1,3,3‐Tetratriflylpropene (TTP): A Strong,Allylic C–H Acid for Brønsted and Lewis Acid Catalysis

Tetratrifylpropene (TTP) has been developed as a highly acidic, allylic C–H acid for Brønsted and Lewis acid catalysis. It can readily be obtained in two steps and consistently shows exceptional catalytic activities for Mukaiyama aldol, Hosomi–Sakurai, and Friedel–Crafts acylation reactions. X‐ray analyses of TTP and its salts confirm its designed, allylic structure, in which the negative charge is delocalized over four triflyl groups. NMR experiments, acidity measurements, and theoretical investigations provide further insights to rationalize the remarkable reactivity of TTP.     

Student enrichment in mathematics: a case study with first year university students

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an enrichment case study to showcase a possible avenue for attending to the needs of academically strong mathematics students. We report on a group of university students who were presented with the opportunity of exploring a specific first year mathematics topic deeper, using an inquiry-based learning approach as part of an enrichment programme. Following the intervention, students completed a questionnaire and a few were interviewed to establish their experiences of the enrichment programme. We discuss the successes and pitfalls of the intervention and report on the impact it had on the participants.     

Minimum-norm fixed point of nonexpansive mappings with applications

The purpose of this paper is to present two new iterative algorithms to find the minimum norm fixed point of nonexpansive nonself-mappings in the framework of Hilbert spaces. The results presented in this paper improve and extend the corresponding ones announced by Yao and Xu [Yao Y, Xu HK. Iterative methods for finding minimum norm fixed point of mappings with applications. Optimization. 2011;60:645–658] and many others. Some applications to convex minimization and split feast problems(SFP) are also included.     

Measure and integration: The basic extension and representation theorems in terms of new inner and outer envelopes

The work of the author in measure and integration is based on new inner and outer envelope formations, which replace the traditional Carathéodory outer measure and certain simple suprema and infima. The new formations lead to essential improvements in both the extent and the adequacy of the basic results. However, they did not find an entrance into the recent textbook literature. The present paper seeks to demonstrate their power with the examples of the basic inner and outer extension and representation theorems for set functions and functionals.
